池田豊人香川県知事へ、長田慶太委員長から書簡を提出しました

2026年9月14日、「旧香川県立体育館再生委員会」の長田慶太委員長より、池田豊人香川県知事宛てに書簡を提出しました。 1964年に竣工し、「船の体育館」の愛称で親しまれてきた丹下健三設計の旧香川県立体育館について、現在、解体工事をめぐる協議の場は司法に委ねられています。 今回の書簡では、これまで再生委員会が県との対話を求めてきた経緯を伝えるとともに、旧香川県立体育館の再生・活用をめぐり、改めて直接対話の機会を設けていただきたいとの思いを長田委員長から池田知事にお伝えしました。

また、再生委員会には現在、旧香川県立体育館の買取意向を示す地元企業が新たに加わっており、具体的な取得や事業化については、県による入札等の適切な手続きに沿って進める考えであることも記しています。 旧香川県立体育館は、香川の戦後建築史を象徴する建築の一つです。再生委員会としては、司法における手続きとは別に、県と関係者が直接情報を共有し、対話する機会が実現することを願っています。 以下、長田慶太委員長から池田豊人香川県知事へ提出した書簡を全文掲載します。

拝啓

多忙とは存じますが、突然のお手紙、大変失礼致します。 

1964年に竣工し、船の体育館の愛称を持つ丹下建築「旧香川県立体育館」の躯体解体が目の前に迫っていた最中…。この度、司法要請により「事実上の証拠保全」が認められたことはすでにご存じの事かと存じます。 この「戦後モダニズム建築の保存」を争点として、日本初とも言える「事実上の証拠保全」発出は、日本の戦後史、建築史、そして香川が持つ系譜を考えていく上でも重要な事柄であると思われます。 

今、協議の場は司法に委ねられておりますが、それは一重に、池田知事をはじめとした県政を担われている方々と前向きな対話が出来る機会が実現せず、他の選択肢がなかったことにほかありません。 池田様とも会う機会を切望し、様々な方々にも問い掛けて参りましたが、対話の場としてお目にかかることが叶わぬまま、今に至りつつも、長き間、民意が行政を動かしてくれることを信じて進んで参りました。 

現在、「再生委員会」は、旧香川県立体育館への買取意向を示してくれる地元企業を新たに加え、この一年を経て、更に成長しました。 但し、我々委員会は様々な分野の企業をまとめた抽象としての存在にすぎません。ですから、無論、それぞれの企業体が県による入札等の適切なプロセスに沿う所存でございます。 

7割以上の県民が協議実現を望み、司法が判断を示した今… 民意だけでなく司法の意志とも相反しようと香川県政の選択が歴史的な禍根を残してしまう前に…最後に…直接対話を通じた正確な情報のもと… 二度と実現できない地域の貴重な文化資産とあわせ、県民、そして、私たちに向き合ってくれることを切に望んでいます。 

どうか一度、公式、非公式を問わず、 池田様に御目にかかれる機会を賜りたく、僭越ながら一筆書かせて頂きました。 ぜひとも、よろしくお願い申し上げます。

A Letter Was Submitted to Kagawa Prefecture Governor Toyoto Ikeda On September 14, 2026, Keita Osada, Chair of the “Committee for the Revitalization of the Former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium,” submitted a letter to Kagawa Prefecture Governor Toyoto Ikeda. The former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium, designed by Kenzo Tange, was completed in 1964 and has been affectionately known as the “Ship Gymnasium.” Currently, discussions regarding its demolition have been referred to the courts. In this letter, Chairman Osada conveyed to Governor Ikeda the history of the Revitalization Committee’s efforts to seek dialogue with the prefecture, and expressed the committee’s desire to once again arrange an opportunity for direct dialogue regarding the revitalization and utilization of the former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium. The letter also notes that a local company has recently joined the Revitalization Committee, expressing an intention to purchase the former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium, and that the committee intends to proceed with specific acquisition and commercialization plans in accordance with appropriate procedures, such as a public bidding process, as determined by the prefecture. The former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium is one of the buildings that symbolizes Kagawa’s postwar architectural history. The Revitalization Committee hopes that, separate from the legal proceedings, opportunities for direct information sharing and dialogue between the prefecture and relevant stakeholders will be realized. Below is the full text of the letter submitted by Committee Chair Keita Nagata to Kagawa Prefecture Governor Toyohito Ikeda.

Dear Chairman Toyohito Ikeda, Governor of Kagawa Prefecture: I realize you are very busy, and I apologize for the sudden letter. Just as the demolition of the structural framework of the “Former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium”—a Tange-designed building completed in 1964 and nicknamed the “Ship Gymnasium”—was imminent… I assume you are already aware that a “de facto preservation of evidence” order has been granted in response to a judicial request. With the “preservation of postwar modernist architecture” as the central issue, the issuance of this “de facto preservation of evidence”—arguably a first in Japan—is considered a significant development in terms of reflecting on Japan’s postwar history, architectural history, and the legacy of Kagawa Prefecture. While the matter is now in the hands of the courts, this is solely because we were unable to secure an opportunity for constructive dialogue with those responsible for prefectural governance, including Governor Ikeda, and had no other choice. We have earnestly sought an opportunity to meet with Governor Ikeda and have reached out to various individuals, but even as we have reached this point without having been able to meet with him for a dialogue, we have continued to move forward, believing for a long time that the will of the people would drive the administration. Currently, the “Revitalization Committee” has grown further over the past year, having added a new local company that has expressed an intention to purchase the former Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium. However, our committee is merely an umbrella organization bringing together companies from various sectors. Therefore, it goes without saying that each participating company intends to adhere to the appropriate processes established by the prefecture, such as the bidding process. Now that more than 70 percent of the prefecture’s residents hope to see these discussions realized and the judiciary has rendered its decision… before the choices made by the Kagawa Prefectural Government—which run counter not only to the will of the people but also to the will of the judiciary—leave a historical legacy of regret… finally… based on accurate information obtained through direct dialogue… I earnestly hope that you will engage with the residents of the prefecture and with us, along with this precious regional cultural asset that can never be recreated. I have taken the liberty of writing this letter in the hope that I might be granted an opportunity—whether formal or informal—to meet with Mr. Ikeda at least once. I sincerely ask for your kind consideration. Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt wishes for Mr. Ikeda’s continued success and good health.
